Situated on a diversified farm in southeast Iowa, the campus of Land Alliance offers a wide variety of experiential education and retreats for all ages. Central to our vision is sharing the experience of agrarian life. The measured pace of tending the land, learning it's skills and celebrating the art forms that have risen from it, helps to preserve the health of our communities.
From prairie burns and ag construction, to the artisan skills of wood fired baking, nature craft and food preservation, Land Alliance offers an broad set of experiences for guests who visit the farm.
In addition to hands on learning, guests are invited to a diverse set of retreats. Personal, group and public retreats offer a chance for self reflection as well as a chance to engage the broader community.
What is a folk school? A folk school advocates for land based skills and lifestyle, creative excellence in traditional music, art and craft, and vibrancy and sustainability within agrarian communities.
Originating in Denmark, folk schools were "schools for life" focusing on adult education for the purpose of improving quality of life in communities. Folk Schools have also become a means through which traditional techniques and skills are preserved and celebrated. Whether learning a new trade, a new hobby, or gaining information on current land issues, students of folk schools engage the cultural phenomenon of agrarian life.
